Tyne Renewable Energy Plant

Located in the Port of Tyne on England’s North East coast, the ¬£400m Tyne Renewable Energy Plant (Tyne REP) is of a similar design to the Tees REP and will also be one of the world’s largest biomass power stations.

Sourcing sustainable biomass fuels from the UK and globally, it will generate around 2.4 TWhrs of electricity each year, enough to power 600,000 homes.

As it will work around the clock, every day of the year (base-load) it will produce as much renewable electricity in a year as a 1,000MW wind farm. The station will help to meet the EU’s renewable energy target of 20% by 2020, accounting for 5% of the UK’s target, and it will save about 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

MGT Tyne, the project development company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of MGT Power Ltd, is applying for consent from the UK Government under Section 36 of the Electricity Act. Subject to consent, the power station will enter commercial operation in 2015.
